Blue Shield Medicare Supplement

Blue Shield of California offers 5 Medicare Supplement plans: A, G, G Extra, F Extra and N for Californians with Medicare Part A and Part B.

One of these plans could very well be the right plan for you.  And they are from a company who has been providing health care coverage for over 65 years.  Blue Shield Medicare Supplement plans offer the freedom to choose any doctor, specialist or hospital, or any other provider that accepts Medicare.

In other words you are not limited to a network. Our two most comprehensive and popular Blue Shield Medicare Supplement plans; Plan D and Plan F, pay the Medicare Part A deductible of $1,556 and the 20% coinsurance after the Part B deductible of $233.

In fact no other standardized Medicare Supplement plan offered in California offers more complete protection for your uncovered Part B expenses than Plan F.

  • Your Part A deductible and coinsurance.
  • The cost of 365 extra days of hospital care during your lifetime after Medicare coverage ends.
  • Your Part B coinsurance and the cost of the first three pints of blood.
  • Skilled Nursing Facility copayment.
  • Important benefits for at-home care after a hospital stay in addition to the basic benefits.

Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plan F.

  • Your Part A deductible ($1,556 each benefit period) and coinsurance.
  • The cost of 365 extra days of hospital care during your lifetime after Medicare coverage ends.
  • Your Part B coinsurance and the cost of the first three pints of blood.
  • Skilled Nursing Facility copayment.
  • $203 Part B Medicare deductible.
  • Part B doctor charges that are in excess of Medicare-approved amounts.

Discounts … If you are new to Medicare, Anthem offers a $25 per month discount for the first year, and Blue Shield offers a $25 per month discount.

California also offers a terrific “Guaranteed Issue” advantage.  Each year during the annual open enrollment period, which is on the month of your birthday a Medicare Supplement member can switch to a different company plan with same or less benefits without having to be approved medically.

So if you have a Medicare Supplement Plan F with another company, during the month of your birthday, you can choose any company plan F which is available in California.  This allows you freedom to choose companies with lower premiums regardless of your current health.

An alternative to a Medicare Supplement plan is a Medicare Advantage plan.  One of the most popular California Medicare Advantage plans is the Anthem Medicare Preferred PPO Plan, and it includes the Medicare Part D Rx coverage at no additional cost.
