Plan G’s are federally standardized, meaning, all Plan G’s across the country have the same benefits.  Some companies have added some vision and or hearing benefits, but in regards to medical coverage, all Plan G’s are the same.

Blue Shield is only available in California, although their Medicare Supplement plans work in all 50 states.  If you are travelling to another state, feel free to use your plan like you do in California.  Coverage and availability do not change when you are in another state.  This is one of the reasons why Medicare Supplement policies are so popular and easy to use.

California has the ‘Birthday Rule.’  This allows any California resident who has an active Medicare Supplement policy from any company, to switch companies during your birthday every year.  You are able to enroll in a new company from your birthday and moving forward 60 days.  This is considered your birthday rule open enrollment period, and your enrollment is guaranteed regardless of health status.  So be sure to compare the different company rates, because, you are not receiving anything more by paying a higher premium.  Medical benefits are identical from company to company.

Standard MediGap Plans C, D, F, G, M, and N provide foreign travel emergency health coverage when you travel outside the U.S.

  • Covers foreign travel emergency care if it begins during the first 60 days of your trip, and if Medicare doesn’t otherwise cover the care.
  • Pays 80% of the billed charges for certain medically necessary emergency care outside the U.S. after you meet a $250 deductible for the year.

Foreign travel emergency coverage with MediGap policies has a lifetime limit of $50,000.

Initial Enrollment Period – This is when you are new to medicare.  You have 6 months to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan, with guaranteed acceptance and without medical underwriting.  You also have 3 months to enroll in a Drug or Advantage plan from the date your Medicare Part B starts.  If you go beyond the three months, most likely you will have to wait for the next open enrollment period (October 15 thru December 7), for your January 1 start date.
