Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage

There are major differences between a medicare supplement and a medicare advantage plan.

A medicare supplement provides freedom of choice nationwide with doctors and hospitals as long as they accept medicare.  The coverage is typically very comprehensive, plan F provides 100% coverage, no copays or deductibles.  Medicare supplement policies are not cheap, they will usually cost between $125 to $300 per month depending on your age, the plan and your county or residence.  Also you will need to enroll in a Medicare Part D Rx plan, as medicare supplements do not include prescription service.

Medicare Advantage plans are typically either a HMO or PPO style plan depending on your County. They include the part D Rx coverage and the premiums are usually very low, sometimes even $0 premium. The vast majority of Advantage plans are HMO’s which need you to choose one Primary Care Physician (PCP) when you first enroll.

This PCP will organize your healthcare and refer you to specialists within the same medical group.  If you are looking for freedom of choice with doctors, the Advantage HMO plan will probably not work very well for you.

Medicare A & B

Before you can enroll in any type of medicare supplement, medicare advantage or part D plan, you must first have medicare A and B in force.  It’s always safe to check with Medicare to make sure your Part B will start when you want it to.

Part A automatically starts the first day of the month on your 65th birthday.  Part B doesn’t always automatically start.  Many times your employer group health plan is still in place, so be sure to check with medicare.

Enrolling in any of these plans are quick and easy.  The enrollment process usually takes only about a week to to have the company generate an ID number and finish processing your enrollment.  Once the enrollment is complete you should receive your ID card and policy in the mail within another week.
